Davis Cup

If you have to mention on of the biggest annual team competitions in sport that the Davis cup is on top of list! Top players around the world join their nations as they battle each other for the crown of being the top Tennis nation in the World. South Africa hosted Luxembourg for a chance to stay in Euro/Africa group. We were off to a very strong start as both Tucker Vorster and Lloyd Harris (making is debut for South Africa) won their singles matches in straight sets.

On day two we had the dubbles matches where Ruan Roelofse and Dean O’Brien represented us. We were off to a very good and comfortable starts with us winning the first set 6-3, but Mike and Ugo started to play higher percentage tennis and pushed the South Africans a little bit harder. Unfortunately they could hold on at 5-5 and. South Africa broke serve and held to take the second set 7-5. From there on they backs of the Red Lions of Europe were broken and south africa sailed away 6-2 in the third set which also means victory in the Tie!

Come day 3 and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful Autumn Morning. With South Africa already winning the Tie, one begins to wonder how will this day turn out. But Captain Ondruska opted to keep both Tucker and Lloyd for the return singles take home this rubber 5-0.

Tucker opened preceding and pushed very hard in the third game of the match where he had to save a few break points against Tom Diederich who was also making his debut of Luxembourg. After holding in that mini marathon Tucker managed to break Tom serve and from then on you could see the confidence grown in the Pretorian. 6-3 and 6-4 was the score as Tucker took home the victory and South Africa were now leading 4-0 in the rubber with the final match to come.

Enter the most exciting Tennis Player Mzansi has seen in Years. Lloyd Harris didn’t even look like a kid making his debut. He just stood up and raised his hand and brought back the win for South Africa 6-2, 6-1. Lloyd is extremely talented and he is a huge prospect for South Africa.

5-0 was the Final Score and Marcus Ondruska can be very proud of his boys “they fought from day one till day three, can’t ask for me” but what lies ahead in July when we travel away to Lithuania? What type of court will we play on? Who Kevin be there? Maybe not. But we still have Raven Klaasens who can come into the doubles. But ever they decided to through at us! I trust our boys will be ready and eager to push us closer to the Elite group of Davis Cup!
